Custom Fields

About Custom Fields

Using Custom Fields is the way to customize individual pages of posts in Styx. Custom Fields help you to lay out your website as you wish. For now Styx offers numerous Custom Field option and the number of the seoptions just grows as I develop this theme. First of all, let’s see what are the current Custom Field options.

Custom Fields in Styx

  • icon

With the icon key you can specify a mini icon in the Menu for a static page. The value for the icon key should be a filename of an icon file located in Styx’s image directory (/wp-content/themes/styx/images/). Use custom icons to give unique look to a menuitem! As Styx comes with the Silk Icons created by Mark James @ famfamfam.com, it is easy to find a good-looking mini icon for a page. For example you have a page called Gallery and you want to use the photo icon: you have to enter the following value for the icon key: icons/photo.png, as the photo.png file (and all icon files are located in the “icons” folder in the images directory).

  • icon_bgpos

If the icon you’ve selected to use has some special size (for example the flags icons located at icons/flags/) it maybe displayed a bit strange, a few pixels down or up, etc, you can adjust its background-position via the icon_bgpos key’s value. This value is injected as a css style so you can enter the value accordingly. For example: “left top !important” or “7px 6px !important” (without quotes). The first and the second value can be a keyword such as left, center, right / top, center, bottom and they also can be dimensions in pixels. The third word “!important” is needed to not get this value overridden by other css rules.

If you want to display a shorter title in the Menu you should use the menu_title key and a value that will be the caption in the Menu. For example you have a page called “Photo Gallery” but you think it is too long to display in the menu you can give the menu_title key the value “Photos”.

  • show_comments

You can disable commenting when you edit a page or post, but if you want to instantly switch off the comments area you should use the show_comments key with the value “no”. You can use optionally “yes” or nothing as a value so the page or post will display its comment area.

Same effect as the show_comments above. You can remove the footer widgets area with this Custom Field.

  • show_post_info

You can hide the Post Info box below a post’s or page’s content. Usage as above.

  • show_sidebar

With this option you can hide the Sidebar from the side of the page or a single post. If you hide this the layout of the page will change and the content area will be placed in the center with increased width.

If you have an idea…

So for now with Styx you can use the above Custom Fields. This list will grow and as I develop Styx I will include more Custom Field options to let you customize every aspect of your site.

If you have some ideas please share it with me, so I can implement them in the future versions of Styx!
